Periapical Abscess This is the most common type of abscess and it is a tooth-related one. If a tooth develops a crack or decay, then the soft, living tissues inside of it may become exposed to bacteria. The bacteria cause infection, which can spread down the tooth root into its tip. Their extravasation in the periradicular tissues or leakage into the oral cavity is found to be associated with severe inflammation, hematoma formation, chemical burns, neuronal damages, choking, endophthalmitis, ototoxicity and severe hypersensitivity reactions.6,8,9 An acute periradicular abscess can develop as a result of the excessive and sudden microbial invasion of periradicular tissues.

Formation of oxygen-derived free radicals, such as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, together with the release of lysosomal enzymes by polymorphonuclear neutrophils—such as elastase, collagenase, and gelatinase—induce the destruction of the extracellular matrix, leading to Dentists treat an abscess immediately to minimize chances of dangerous spread of infection by draining the pus, which requires oral surgery to remove the tooth or root canal treatment. Antibiotics help eliminate the infection, but removing the diseased pulp and draining the pus are more important.
